Size does not matter (much)

Ah. I am so tired stumbling every so often on stupid articles online about “size does matter” and “size does not matter” (on Digg.com, no less). Here’s the truth of it all to put the issue to rest: Size does not matter that much. But thickness does.

Motorola to join Sony Ericsson in ownership of UIQ

Sony Ericsson and Motorola, Inc. have announced a definitive agreement under which Motorola will acquire a 50% interest in UI Holdings BV, the parent company of UIQ Technology AB, which is currently wholly owned by Sony Ericsson. Under the agreement, Motorola and Sony Ericsson will work together and jointly invest in the development of the UIQ open user interface platform.

And this is the official death knell of Motorola. Not because UIQ is a bad platform (actually it is, but that’s not the point), but because Motorola simply doesn’t have a fucking clue of what it wants. They see that the “smartphone future” is the actual future, but they open 100 doors and follow all of them, spreading money, resources and creating consumer confusion instead of picking one technology, sticking with it, and properly develop it instead of fucking around with zero enhancements (like their Linux phones for example).

They announced two different paths with Linux and now they open a new one with UIQ. This is clearly a company WITHOUT A PLAN. This company has nothing to do with Nokia and their S60, or Apple and their iPhone, or even HTC and Windows Mobile. They just throw the net and are hoping for a good fishing day. But one day their money and luck will run out.

Rose Petal Cottage

While watching “Heroes”, this commercial popped up (click “watch it” on the right side of the page). I can tell you one thing for sure. If I ever have a daughter, I would never buy this “toy” for her. Just watching that ad made me wanna puke.

Deshead: the guy is God

Wow, what a talented and so productive individual this is. Deshead has written a whole lot of songs, and he gives them all away. He made a CD out of them too, but all the songs are also available for free. Best song of the album is “I meant to remember” (right click to save it). That’s the kind of song that can make you a superstar, and I bet the guy didn’t even try to get a contract with a label and get some promotion for it…

I have about 10 GBs of free promotional, legal, mp3s from indie rock bands, and this guy’s songs are above the average with few of them being top notch. Where others struggle to even compose 2-3 songs that are actually listenable, he’s got about 30.

Nudity

So, the first time I saw an adult male naked. It was the time when I was studying to become a nurse, in Corfu Greece, in 1991. I was 18 years old at the time (and still a virgin — but not for long, as I got engaged 6 months later). Poor man, he just had a surgery, and the next thing he had to endure was 16 female to-be-nurses looking at his crotch, erm, I mean his surgery near by — females with ages ranging from 15 to 18.

Now, someone might get turned on by the idea of getting scrutinized by teenagers, but that guy was in living terror! I could see it in his eyes, he was extremely uncomfortable, almost to the point of start crying… I wonder why some people are having problems with nudity. I even heard recently that some women don’t feel comfortable with doctors. Oh, come on…

The Void

Amazing electro-ambient song from Michal “Mirrored” Cielecki. Download “The Void” the free mp3 from here (legal).

Update: I just discovered Midlake. This and this songs of theirs are amazing. In fact, if I could just express what kind of music actually represents me, this style is exactly it. A modern twist to FleetwoodMac-like music from the ’70s. Or something.

35mm adapter

I want one… So my HV20 footage looks like this, instead of like this. But getting a good one costs $700+lenses (sample footage). Building one from scratch is not easy, and it costs almost as much anyway. Ah… I hope Canon comes up with something like this soon.

Shopping bags

In most European countries, customers of grocery stores are encouraged, if not required, to put their groceries on bags instead of having the employees of the store do it for them. In USA (or just in California?), this is not so. Customers just sit around like cows, and the employees both parse the items in the scanner and fill up the shopping bags. I mean, sure, if they don’t have much work you can let them do it all, but if you can see a fucking queue of 2 kilometers on the back, why not help out with your own bagging?

I always take care of my own groceries with bagging at Safeway or Trader Joe’s btw. It’s just stupid to not to. “This is their job, let them do it” excuse does not make sense to me in this case. Why not help out? Not only you help the employee, but also you help your co-shoppers and you help yourself too by finishing up faster.

Today at Trader Joe’s there was this young woman ahead of us. Instead of doing some bagging to help the running-like-crazy employee, she instead opened her purse, took out her lipstick, and she passed it over her fucking lips. What a waste of human flesh.

Misc stuff

* OSNews is down. No idea what’s wrong. Possibly a DoS attack. I emailed our admin. Update: Apparently mysql crashes. Our admin restarted the server, but now it’s down again.
* Vincent, my brother in law, is visiting from France. I hope he will have a good time during his stay here.
* I have made $2.28 in four months from my Revver videos. Not that I want or need ad money of course, but video sharing earnings are obviously not much, not even for videos that are viewed a million times.
* Quite some shit in the political scene right now. Too many things are going on, most of them bad… I stopped caring.
* An interesting article on robot-human relations. However, there can’t be a “relationship” if the robots do look human, but their AI stays as crappy as it is today.
* We are going to the Apple Store later today to check the new iPods. Need to buy some DV tapes at Frys too.
* “Study finds that people are programmed to love chocolate”. I blame the bacteria too.

Review of the tripod-wheels Tiffen W3

Weeeeeeeee…….

Not very smooth I am afraid. Nothing beats a steadycam. But under certain conditions, this is an acceptable product. My review is here.
