But a free open and distributed network (like email, jabber) is also available. Not making your friends hostages to one service.

Most people use Identica, although you can use whatever, as long as it supports OpenMicroBlogging. In the beginning, Twitter was thinking about implementing it, but then they got all monopolistic and didn’t want anymore.

Too bad that most people don’t see the problem anyway. So it’s a chicken and egg-problem. Not critical mass of people, and hard to get people over «because Twitter is bigger». Doh.
