Phantasmak did a very nice post in Greek the other day on the situation in Greece (and elsewhere) about the anti-americanism that’s brewing there. Many will argue that the American Government is the bad guy and that always has been, but usually things are not so black and white. Americans are not innocent in the world political and military scene. But they aren’t as guilty as most people want them to be either.

And in the case of Greece, the TV, print & Radio media there makes things worse as they are not objective at all. They never were, ever, about any topic. Every news agency has a political agenda there. This is one of the reasons why I consider Greece to still be in the middle ages: their media has f*cked up the people’s minds throughout the last 60 years. I love Greece, but I can never go back there to live an every day life. I had nothing in common with most of the people there when I used to live there. I was always the black sheep at school or our social circle for being outspoken and standing up for what’s right rather than what the society has come to expect from a young female.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some enlighted Greek people alright. But these are leaving Greece for other countries soon enough, and all what’s left in Greece are the idiots. And when you have a country full of idiots, it can’t go very far. At best, the intelligent people today in Greece, are the minority.

Given the political agenda of the US towards Greece over the past 30 years it’s difficult to stay impartial. However I can only see detestment towards their politicians. This is largely true even for out ‘traditional’ enemy Turkey. There is also a general feeling that US citizens behave very much like sheep and are more easily manipulated than in other European western nations.

The only thing that surfaces once in a while are demonstrations by University students. Then again we (the rest of us) point at them because they have a Stallman look going over. This again is understandable since we have so many immigrants from middle eastern countries.

When it comes to the media, I admit that over the past years I’ve seen a lot of attempted-manipulation going on, but maybe that’s the reason that Greeks have the lowest percentage of trust towards the media in Europe.
Otherwise I think we have the best political satire in Europe — and I’ve seen a lot, Colbert doesn’t even come close. I can torrent you a weekly show if you want.
Also kindly remember you are writing this from the country that hosts FOX.

Over the consumption thing, we are the same Thom. Actually we consume more. The only -personal- difference to what you describe is the southern accent thing. My mind draws a red blinking “REDNECK” sign over these people, I really can’t help it…

I was bored so I did over your Wikipedia page.

Hope you feel it was fair. I expanded some things, corrected grammar, split up into categories, added a picture. If you think anything is wrong, let me know here and I’ll happily change it.

Thank you, so kind of you. Just two things:
“a day to over two million.” The right number is 265,000 per day.

“She still writes her monthly tech column for Greek ZDNet PC Magazine.”

I stopped that a few months ago. ;)

Idiots are the majority in any country.

Mine is dominated by border-line Communists that’ll cling to Socialist health care no matter how much it’s failing. They can’t even tolerate the idea of at least having a Public/Private system.

it’s very iritating actually, watching my fellow greeks cursing GW Bush for his “black and white” view of things while they are the SAME from the opposite side.
oh, and it’s impossible for me to watch TV, I actually don’t care about 24-hour Hezpolah propaganda.

PS: I am leaving Eugenia for Scotland, I will try to post photos from my trip :)

That’s inteesting. In The Netherlands, the media are quite impartial, and in the quality newspapers you’ll see both pro and anti-American stances. In my country, you cannot afford one-sidedness.

Anti-Americanism is a wrong word anyway. The name implies a hatred with the US people, while it is in fact a hatred for your government, and in my case, your governmental structure/system.

I have no problems with individual Americans. Hell I even been to the US and had a marvellous time. The people were so friendly, open, and genuinely interested in who I was and where I came from.

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoy many truly American things. I have a huge soft-spot for ’50s American morals, American cars, American music (if there’s one thing Americans do better than anyone else in the world, it’s making good music), the American variant of English (I just melt when a pretty lady has a southern accent), etc. etc.

ooh, weird.. there was more text to that last post that seems to have been hidden..

It was something like:

Could you send me an email giving permission to use the picture – or send me one that is freely usable, as a Wikipedia mafia decided to delete the one I put there because the license was invalid.

The email address on this entry is correct ;-)

Also: It is sooo good hearing that you moved your ass from here, going back to BuSHIT fascist land. In fact, we dont like american terrorists in our country.

P.S- I just wonder why it took more than 7(!!!) hours to your “enlighted” media, such as CNN to announce that GREECE kicked off U.s.a.(101-95) from the final of World Basketball Championship!
It seems that you are not only the No1 terrorists on this planet. You are also the No1 CLOWNS!!
