50% more people by 2050

This news at CNN are appaling and very disturbing. The world’s population on this planet is to go up by 50% by 2050.

This is WAY too much for this planet to manage to feed us all, and keep balance with nature. We are killing our own planet by increasing the population in this fashion. And when we are killing our planet, we are killing OURSELVES.

Concious birth control *for all*, NOW (and no, that doesn’t mean birth pills, but concious individual responsibility). No more than a billion people on this planet please!

But you know, more people mean more consumers and more money for the rich corporations. And also means less food and standard of life for the rest of the people. Something needs to be done.

RE: Olympic opening ceremony

I stayed up all night last night to see the astronauts from the SpaceStation talking live into the Stadium, but the freaking NBC cut that down!!

And they also cut down every close-up to this parade that simulated nudity.

Freaking pouritan idiots.

Greeks suspend sprinters

I hope they remove the olympic medals of Kenteris and Thanou. The newspapers around the world were writing for years that these two Greek national heroes are on doping drugs, however the greeks didn’t wanna hear it: “they just can’t stomach the fact that greeks are now good in sprinting”, they kept saying.

I knew Kenteris long before any common greeks found out about him (I used to follow track&field in Greece from 1988 to 1994 vigorously as I did some javellin myself when I was a teenager). And Thanou –what a coincidence– is originally from the *next* village that I grew up (I am from Skiadas, she is from Polystafyllo, just 4 Km away, small villages at the Ipeiros mountains (“Lakka Souliou” for the Greeks)). I haven’t met her in person (she grew up in Athens), but I have met her parents and grandparents a few times (mostly in social gatherings, like weddings in the village).

Being away from Greece makes you evaluate better the situation. Greeks have a tendency to be extremists when it comes to the “pride of their country” and stuff. I was never like that, I am not “pro-country” for any country. I am a hard-core cold-blood realist. I was always the one that would critisize their way of life and their belief that they are somehow the “center of the world”. They aren’t, and no one gives a shit about Greece abroad, other than having good time on their islands during vacation. That created quite some hostility between myself and some Greeks who used to read my rants about the Greek way of life, but I don’t care. *I love* Greece, but I love it for different reasons than they do. I love the intimacy between people (also a big problem at the same time), I love my family, I love the sea, I love the greek food. I hate the weather (too hot for my taste) and a slew of other things that I better not get into because it will create a stir (again).

In short, I hope they force Kenteris, Thanou and their coach out of their careers. They don’t deserve the “halleloujah”, it was an open secret that they were using drugs, it’s just that most greeks all these years didn’t wanna believe it (reading the web pages of many greek sport sites they would talk about “war against our heroes from people abroad” and other crap like that). Time to grow up and face reality lads. There’s “no smoke without a fire somewhere”, as you say.

Olympic opening ceremony

I think the Greeks have made a great opening ceremony. From the pictures I saw, I think it was fantastic, best ever. I don’t believe that anyone else could do a better one, even if 4 or 8 years ago had the technology of today.

I am often critical of the Greeks and their way of life, but they have pulled it off well this time.

And as I write that, one more Cardinal fish is ready to die in our fishtank. Darn it, I hate that. 🙁

Giving an end to a suffering

We had 16 cardinals (fish), we are now left with 8.

Just a few minutes ago I saw that there was one new cardinal dead too (floating and had lost half of its color). But soon later I noticed that it would flap every few seconds. It was obviously at the very end of its life.

I decided to boil some water and kill it completely, to give an end to its suffering (this is how you supposed to kill fish without suffer — they die in an instant).

This was the first time I had to kill something. Sure, I have squashed flies, spiders, mosquitos and ants during my lifetime, but nothing as major. God forgive me. But it was for its own good, I couldn’t watch it suffer like that. I sure hope that someone would have such mercy on me and give an end to a suffering, if I was in a comparable position.

No, we still haven’t found what caused our cardinals to die one by one. It is obviously something that was brought in with the new fish, we just don’t know what… 🙁

Dead fish

We bought 12 Cerpae Tetra fish the other day and they are doing good. Too bad though that now all our Cardinals die for some mysterious reason. It is either the water from the shop that might have been full of antibiotics (killing the good bacteria in the tank), or that the new Tetra fish bite the Cardinals… We had 16 Cardinals, now we are left with about 9 or 10 in two days time and we still keep counting down. Even our Danios don’t seem to be very happy with the new fish, they only stay at the top of the fishtank, while they used to play all around the tank. Poor fish.. 🙁

Charles put up an interview with me up. We discuss lots of different tech things. Thanks Charles.

shopping spree and a camcorder

Weekends are terrible for me and JBQ. Everytime we go out on weekends, we spend way too much money, mostly on things we will never really use. We spent $250 today…

Oh, did I mention that I will be having the Canon ZR80 camcorder by Tuesday? Can’t wait! Our first camcorder! (no, the camcorder’s price is not included in the above $250)

No HTML browser?

WTF? Samsung released an expensive kinda-smartphone phone, the SGH-d415, with big screen and stuff, and it ships it only wiht a WAP 2 browser! No Openwave HTML browser? Why not??? With the 176×220 resolution this phone has, it could have rocked with Openwave’s latest 6.2.x browser or 7.0.1.

I am going to linuxworld for a couple of hours tomorrow… It should be exciting meeting interesting people.

On other news, Slashdot’s cookies don’t work with IE anymore (if you try to login). They broke them a few days ago. I am posting this with Safari on OSX.
