Four months with Paleo

I wrote an article a few months ago about the amazing health results I got from Paleo in just 6 weeks of using the diet. In the list, there were some items that were marked as “work in progress”. Well, here’s an update on these health problems on the 4 month mark.

* Eczema: Gone.
* Teeth sensitivity: Gone.
* Muscle atony on right arm/hand: Gone.
* Fibromyalgia-like pain: Gone.
* Sugar addiction: Gone-enough to be thinking of trying a ketogenic version of Paleo.
* Period pain: Comes and goes, depending on the month, but not as strong anymore.
* IBS-D: Depending on the week, and how careful I am with my probiotics, I might get one bad incident, or not.
* Alopecia: No new hair (yet), but they don’t fall as much anymore. (update: new hair is here!)
* Sleep apnea: This is reduced compared to pre-paleo, but it has returned, I get it about 2-3 times a month. It should go away as I keep losing weight (I’ve lost 16 lbs so far).

I will update again on the anniversary of the first year. If it continues like this, I expect sleep apnea, period pain, and IBS-D to have gone completely by then. The only real question-mark is if I will ever get new hair…

Hi Eugenia,

I’m glad you recovered from your bout of self loathing in just 10 days. It is not bad to speak from the heart especially when you are passionate and sincere about it, as it seems you are.

I found your blog on google search “fibromyalgia and paleo”. I have always tended to be achy but the last 2 years have been horrible. I got some relief from natural thyroid supplementation, but I still have major issues with food. Loads of sensitivities with joint pain usually following about 24 hours later. I worked out 3 times a week for 10 years and had to stop, because by the time I got home I was so stiff I could barely get out of my car. Let’s not even talk about the weight gain.

The good news is this, my body temp is now normal, and my pulse is no longer slow (as in slow not related to great physical conditioning, just slow LOL).

Bottom line is this, thyroid supplementation took care of part of the problem, but not all of it. Nightshades really tear me up and my allergy tests were positive for dairy and yeast. I have always done low carb as type 2 diabetes runs in my family and I have never believed in that load of crap the ADA puts out. My Dad is diabetic and when I could keep him on the proper low carb diet, after just 3 days he needed almost no insulin, and that is with no exercise. Dr. Weil once wrote and this is not a direct quote, that diabetes is symptomatic of a metabolism that hasn’t adjusted well to a modern diet. I totally agree. Really a case in point for the Paleo way of eating and shows a very direct cause and effect of the modern diet. So I am ready to embrace the Paleo way of eating and have been trying to get started which is not easy over the holidays. I’m really tired of hurting all the time and living half a life.

Cudos to you for taking on that nasty person with the running commentary about Paleo being a fad diet. It doesn’t get much less fadish then Paleo does it.
Unfortunately so many people are brainwashed by the load of dogmatic crap put out by the government and our well respected medical establishment. If you haven’t read any of Gary Taubes work I hope you will. The more I research the more I realize it’s all connected.

You can quote all the modern studies you want, but if you look at the big laboratory of life in the United States and to a lesser extent most Western countries it’s really obvious that it’s just not working. Low fat equals big waistlines and early onset type 2 diabetes, something that was unheard of a few years ago. Well looks to me like it’s broke so we better fix it.

While I hope I lose weight, that will only just be evidance that Paleo is working in the right direction for me. Most of all I just want to be pain free and get my life back.

Please keep writing and don’t be too hard on yourself. Sometimes passion is required when trying to make a point with a bunch of closed minded people. I’m going to bookmark your site and let you know how I’m doing. Best of health to you in the New Year!!

It’s really good to see your health improving so much. Diet is a very important thing for health and paleo diet (for the little I know about it) seems a decent approach since it focuses on natural food that humans have been eating for thousands of years.

Maybe you could still find some interesting information in a book I recommended over 4 years ago when you mentioned your health problems.

All the best for 2012!
