The 7D situation

A great comment on the HV20’s Canon 7D forum thread, by Fleshoff:

“Kind of funny reading the other forums…
– The RED fanboys are trying to justify the mythical Scarlet
– 5D owners are throwing a hissy fit on their lack of 24p
– GH1 owners are suffering from buyer’s remorse,
and I think the HV owners are counting how much cash they have.”

BTW, some directly-out-of-the-camera clips from the 7D, here. The camera is already out of stock in the… pre-order page of Amazon.

And the GF1 is also a disappointment from a videographer’s point of view. No manual controls like the GH1, only one frame rate. Fail.

I guess I have to start collecting money for the 7D too.

Hi eugeni*

7d has awesome image but I love my gh1. Who has buyer’s remorse? It blows away my hv30 in every way but one, fast panning. For doc work in foreign countries its great. How can a person film in run/gun doc style without auto focus, face detection, face exposure tracking etc. Teamed up with a high end audio recorder its simply awesome. 24p has to be deinterlaced but 7d has .mov files that need proxy editing. And I can’t imagine working without articulating swivel! Anyway, my thoughts on ur thoughts. The images I’m getting are insane, esp since I don’t do a lot of fast panning.

Look very promising. I use HF 100 + DOF adapter and this is the real solution for anyone, who doesn’t want to buy a big cam (and hate tapes like me ;). Another good videos here. And many thanks for your blog ER!

Sorry to burst the bubble, but the quality doesnt look as good as the 5D.
Maybe are the freaking dogs, but the lack of quality footage doesn’t seems to make justice to the camera.

I agree, so far I haven’t seen eye-popping footage from it. I don’t think it’s the fact that “it’s not a 5D” to blame though. Something else is at work here, I am fearing encoding bugs more than anything else. At 48 mbps this camera should FLY, regardless of lens/sensor. Heck, even my $330 Canon SX200 IS digicam at 720/30p 24mbps produces better footage than the ones I’ve seen so far from the 7D.

This tells me that Canon has screwed up something in either the hardware or the software side (possibly software though). Not that the 7D can’t produce as good video as the 5D.

The 7D footage published until now is from pre-production models. We have to wait.

Yes, but. Pre-production models with the latest beta firmware are 99.5% the same as the ones that will be sold. So this is a matter to be worried about.

This clip is the FIRST 7D sample I’ve seen that I like.

So are you still going to buy a Canon 7D?
Now posters have referred to its low price, but I have not been able to find any price for this camera

It is low price for what it does: $1700. And if you add 2-3 “ok” lenses to the mix, the overall price is $2500.

Hefner wrote on September 4th, 2009 at 10:21 AM PST:

That Clip looks much better, but I noticed a little blur on the edges in all the sample videos. For what I see now even a Xacti can do that, ok that sounds exagerated, but the result its the same of others digicams. With this I’m not saying that the 5D is the best, but Canon it’s playing with the specs of those two cameras, trying to sold a product to fulfill the specs the other one lacks, but sacrificing the quality, and consumers are paying the price of that game.

The 5D was like the hook for consumers of the 7D but they are buying a complete different product. In the positive side I will say that the 7D it’s way much better than any Panasonic HVX-something, because of the canon lenses, and the AVC video, That MXF container and the P2 cards are annoying

I wish Nikon would come up with a new firmware for the D300s, ok it is not full HD so I can live with the 720 24p but would like manual shutter and iso. Still don’t know which camera is best in low light, will wait and see!
