I’l be doing that stuff too as soon as the SLR gets here, but that second picture doesn’t look improved at all to my eyes. The original was soft, smooth, and easy on the eyes – natural. Your modification looks way too busy, too sharp, and too… Fake. Unnatural.

The first picture – well, you’ve improved some bits, but especially the brighter colours (the orange/red bottom-left and off-centre right) simply look fake to me. It almost feels as if you took the spray can tool in Paint and used it there.

Advice: be easier with the brighter colours.

It is when you view it in full size. The original pic is pretty washed out.

These are not options, they are plugins. Contrast is on the “Brightness and Contrast” plugin, and Saturation and Gamma are on the “Color Corrector” plugin.
