Phone collection

Here’s our cellphone collection so far. There are two missing phones from the picture that I have tacked away in my closet (Nokia N80 and SonyEricsson K700i), plus 2 more that I sent to my brother in Greece and 1 that I sold a few months ago (the terrible LG Chocolate GSM). I am debating which phone to get next to scrutinize. I am thinking either a Motorola Linux touchscreen one, or two really cheap ones (e.g. Nokia 5070 and SonyEricsson Z310i).

I have only had one phone in my life. For a long time I refused to have one because I thought it would make my life harder. Finally I accepted it because I had to admit that in certain situations it’s very useful. Now I’ve had it for years and I don’t plan to change it, but when I do it my requirements are:

– Easy to press buttons
– Good quality speaker

Those are the only two things I think I’d appreciate and miss in my current old Siemens. I’d be happy with the cheapest model that can offer me those two things.

I’m such a geek :)

But this is what I reviewed last month!! In my blog post I mention that I have an N80 too you see (which I actually have since changed the firmware to Greek and I will send it to my brother).

>Have you reviewed any Blackberries?

I can’t find unlocked recent Blackberries for less than $500. My limit is $300 per month.

Why would I want all of them? They run the same operating system, so differences are not huge between each one of them. We have 2 Nokia S60 phones at our home, that’s enough for now, until S60 v3.1 is released on new phones.

The Philips 968 would be interesting as it runs Qtopia, but the absence of Bluetooth is killing me.

>Danger Sidekick 2

Not available for Cingular. The Sidekick is not sold without a t-mobile contract afaik.

>Philips S900

Not available at the shop I am getting stuff from. Also, rather strange to have a touchscreen at a 2.2″ 176×220. It should have been 2.5″ at 240×320. Other than that, it looks ok.

Ah, I see the i-mate sp3i there. Mine has served me for over 2 years but new windows mobile versions havn’t felt radically upgraded enough for me to think of buying a new phone.

What do you think of you sp3i Eugenia?
I still feel a little frustrated when I use one of the standard nokia phones, get a great user experience and a very fast interface, but on my 172mhz phone I still have to wait 55 seconds for it to boot, wait several seconds for apps like sms and camera to start.

Buy unlocked phones. I never buy locked phones from carriers. And the new S60 3.0 phones are pretty fast as they use faster CPUs. Especially the 6120.

How ugly mobile phones can look! The variety here suggests that the market still hasn’t worked out the form factor that works best with the human ear, eye and hand – and of course brain.

Nokia 6288 here. It’s a great phone on the basis of “use a gadget that does one thing well rather than six things not so well”. I tried an s60 series Nokia 65 but found it slow and ponderous and the firmware was the unbugfixed original stuff with no updates available from the carrier (a typical ripoff here in the UK). Now that two UK carriers have disabled VOIP in the new Nokia N95 to protect their revenues, I’m even happier to have kept clear of the expensive cutting edge stuff.

I hate it. This is my husband’s work phone btw. The only hardware gripe we have for it is that it does not have EDGE support, but the real problem is the terrible UI. I have blogged in the past about the stupid MS Smartphone UI and how terrible it is. Please note that I like the PocketPC Phone Edition with the touchscreen, I just don’t like the Smartphone Edition’s UI.

Get a Nokia S60 3.x phone or an HTC PocketPC phone if you are a power user and a SonyEricsson phone if you are a normal user (not their UIQ-based ones). That’s my advice.

No, I don’t have plans to use anything else but cingular. And as I said, I can’t buy the Sidekick. In US, you have to buy it with a contract. My selection is limited as to what the shop I am collaborating with is selling, and only up to $300.
