What the hell is MS thinking?

I was checking out the Longhorn beta shots:
http://elliottback.com/wp/archives/2005/07/09/long horn-5203-screenshots/ (remove the space in the url that slashdot adds automatically).
So, the OS looks like CRAP. Usability is out of the window, haven’t they LEARN anything from OSX’s transparency fiasco?

Longhorn looks bad, windows look VERY BUSY. I am 100% sure that if you could time travel and get a laptop running Longhorn to a *computer user* of 1985, he would not be able to figure out that UI, while that wouldn’t be the case for OSX and even Gnome.

The ONLY good thing that I can see in these shots is the font quality:

Best font quality, ever.

Coupon 50% OFF of any Belkin product

If you happen to want to buy something Belkin from one of their official resellers, Belkin just sent me a coupon for 50% off of any their products. So, email me if you want the coupon, it’s valid for only 10 days from now and for one purchase.

Linux zealots prove their zealotry

My friend at TuxTops.com was telling me about the defacing they had to endure today on their server after the Fedora review went live on their site and linked from Slashdot. No, the site didn’t go down because of Slashdotting (it held up perfectly), it went down afterwards, obviously from Fedora/Linux zealots. It seems that the Linux zealots can’t take it when someone tells it like it is and has screenshots to prove it. Huh-huh (as Nelson would say on Simpsons)!

Belkin BT CF card == bad luck

Damn you Belkin for never updating your BT CF drivers to work on PPC2003. I had to hard-reset my PDA today and lose all my data because of that fucked up F8T020 driver they have.

The facts:
1. If you have an X5 with PPC2002, buy the card, it will work.
2. If you have PPC2003, the card won’t really work:

  a. The belkin drivers crap-up the system. I had to hard-reset today. 🙁

  b. The Dell Truemobile 300 CF drivers WORK, but the Dell Bluetooth Manager does NOT work (it thinks that BT is OFF, even when it’s ON). Only BASIC functionality works without the Bluetooth Manager (e.g. pairing a device).

  c. There is a hack to use com1.fr’s drivers, which was the ODM company for both Belkin and Dell. And then, by importing special registry data, you could make the Com1 driver work with a Bluetooth Manager using the Belkin CF card. Bad luck for us, the french Com1 company went busted! Their drivers are not available for download anymore.

Conclusion:
1. If you have a Zaurus or a PPC2000-2002 PDA, buy that Belkin card. It will work.
2. If you have anything else, don’t.

New York Times reporter jailed

Fitzgerald also opposed Cooper’s and Miller’s request for home detention — rather than a jail sentence — for refusing to reveal their sources.

BOOOOOOOOO! Journalists SHOULD have the RIGHT to NOT reveal their sources, under ANY circumstances if they were asked to by the source, without being afraid of getting jailed. THAT’s one of the features of what makes a good journalist.

I am 100% against that judge verdict today. There would not be a Watergate if the source didn’t know that he could trust the journalist and the journalist didn’t know if he will go to jail for that or not. The confidentiality thing is here for cases like these and judges should not send journalists to jail for doing their job right and be trustworthy!

An interview and a record

Online friend Ian asked me for an interview today to publish on his personal blog.

On other news, I raised my Bejweled-2 score above 1,960,000 last night (playing in ‘action’ mode).

Missed Judas Priest

The road was very busy on our way to Reno, NV, and so we arrived 30 minutes late, so we missed the Judas Priest concert we wanted to attend… Oh well…
